Green Building United is proud to have selected, as its 2019 Community Impact Project, the Friends of Vare-Washington Schoolyard Beautification Project. The project was designed by the Community Design Collaborative (Collaborative) in 2017 to provide a welcoming, fun, and safe environment for students, while creating a green space for the surrounding community.

Friends of Vare-Washington is a motivated and committed group of parents and community members who have mobilized to make the ambitious and transformational Collaborative design a reality. Green Building United is working with Friends of Vare-Washington during Phase 1 of the project to raise $10,000 for required materials, and mobilize volunteers to help transform the schoolyard.

The culmination of Phase 1 will be a day-of-service, slated for Saturday, June 22nd, and may include:

  • Preparing ground for planting and weed prevention
  • Planting trees and shrubs
  • Painting murals on the playground surface
  • Building a gaga court
  • Installing benches and tables

Green Building United is seeking volunteers to assist with this effort. Volunteer opportunities fall under two main buckets:

Fundraising | Now through June 22nd

Funds are being raised by individuals through Causevox, a peer-to-peer fundraising platform. If interested in helping raise funds, you can contribute on the Causevox page by making a tax exempt donation towards the Schoolyard Beautification Project, or scroll to the bottom of the page to set up your own.

Contact  Aman Desouza with questions about fundraising efforts.

Day-of-Service | Now through June 22nd

Using the design developed by the Collaborative, volunteers are in the process of planning a day-of-service, which is slated for Saturday, June 22, 2019 (rain date of Sunday, June 23rd), and may entail planting, painting, and other schoolyard beautification activities. If interested in helping plan the day-of-service, donating materials or services, and/or volunteering on the day itself, please complete the form below.

Contact Alex DeNadai with questions about day-of-service efforts.
