2022 Groundbreaker Award Nominations

Nominations are now open through November 4th! This year's Groundbreaker Award categories include:

  • Sustainable New Development or Major Renovation 

  • Equity and Community Leadership 

  • Sustainable Building Operations 

  • Green Building United Member of the Year

Sustainable New Development or Major Renovation 

This award will celebrate major advances in sustainability for recent new construction and major renovations.  

Criteria:

  • New construction or renovations; commercial or residential; exteriors, interiors, and/or sites, but must have been completed within the past three years and be located within Green Building United's region (including the greater Philadelphia area, Lehigh Valley, and the State of Delaware; view map).

  • Projects should include some aspect of sustainable building design, energy efficiency, open space or stormwater management, or climate resilience.  

Equity and Community Leadership 

Green Building United is excited to be calling for nominations for individuals and projects that explicitly center equity and justice. The winner of the Equity and Community Leadership award will be offered a one-year membership to Green Building United.  

Criteria:

  • Equity and Community Leadership Green Building United is excited to be calling for nominations for individuals, groups, and projects that explicitly center equity and justice (view map).

  • Nominees will be assessed based on both their approach to environmental sustainability and their commitment and success centering equity, environmental justice, and community priorities in design and implementation.  

Sustainable Building Operations 

This year’s Groundbreaker Awards will celebrate projects that seek to improve the operations, efficiency, and livability of existing buildings.  

Criteria:

  • Existing building with demonstrated progress in sustainability goals over the past three years and located within Green Building United’s region (view map).

  • Projects should include some aspect of sustainable building operation, energy efficiency, open space or stormwater management, or climate resilience.  

GBU Member of the Year 

This year’s Groundbreaker Awards will celebrate an active volunteer within our membership.  The winner of the Green Building United Member of the Year award will be offered a one-year membership to Green Building United. 

Criteria:

  • Must be an active Green Building United member and involved in one or more of Green Building United’s Communities (Passive House, Living Future, Delaware, or Lehigh Valley), Committees ( or major events (Sustainability Symposium, New Gravity Conference, and Groundbreaker Awards)  in 2021-22.

  • Cannot be a current member of Green Building United’s Board of Directors.
