SUMMARY:Symposium Summer Series— Sheet Glass and Plastic: A Lethal Threat to Birds and How to Eliminate the Hazard in Existing and New Construction
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n★1 AIA LU & 1 GBCI CEU pending\nExcept for habitat destruction\, a vast and growing amount of evidence supports the claim that collisions with sheet glass and plastic in residential\, commercial\, and educational buildings cause the deaths of more birds than any other human-associated avian mortality factor. The toll on bird populations is estimated in the billions worldwide. Conservation\, ethical\, and legal reasons justify preventing these unintended and unwanted fatalities that responsible human action can minimally and ideally eliminate. The speakers will provide an overview on this compelling environmental topic having implications for architecture\, landscape architecture\, pollinator habitat\, sustainability\, development\, engineering\, business and economics\, law\, philosophy\, political science\, psychology\, and sociology. Most germane for the professional building industry\, the current state of knowledge\, new innovations in glass technologies\, successful case studies from the University of Pennsylvania and the most effective means of preventing bird-window collisions will be presented.\n\nPricing:\n\n Green Building United Members: FREE\n Non-Members: $10\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_align=”center” text_align=”center” shape_top_height=”150″ shape_bottom_height=”150″][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″]Register Here![/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]Speakers[vc_column_text]Daniel Klem (Professor\, Orinthology and Conservation Biology\, Muhlenberg College)\n\nHeidi Trudell (Bird Friendly Specialist\, Technical Advisor\, Guardian Glass)\n\nChloe Cerwinka (Landscape Planner\, The University of Pennsylvania)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Symposium Summer Series— Artificial Topography
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n★1 AIA LU\, 1 GBCI\, 1 LA CES\, 1 SITES CEU’s pending\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\nThis event has been rescheduled from July 24th to August 6th.\nAs urbanization expands\, access to green space\, natural habitats\, and major urban parks becomes increasingly limited. Artificial Topography explores how the built environment can act as a prosthetic to nature\, creating new ecosystems that support urban life. Through three case studies— Cira Green Urban Park\, Franklin County Extension\, and Mazur Hall Plaza at Temple University—this presentation examines strategies for integrating ecological infrastructure into cities. From rooftop parks that manage stormwater to research facilities that enhance agricultural resilience\, these projects demonstrate how architecture can foster habitats for people\, plants\, and animals. By layering natural and artificial systems\, they redefine how urban spaces interact with nature\, transforming infrastructure into a restorative force. This session will provide insights into designing environments that not only coexist with nature but actively regenerate it.\n\nPricing:\n\n Green Building United Members: FREE\n Non-Members: $10\n\nConsider becoming a member for discounted tickets to our educational & networking events![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_align=”center” text_align=”center” shape_top_height=”150″ shape_bottom_height=”150″][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″]Register Here![/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]Speakers[vc_column_text]\n\n Scott Erdy (Design Principal\, Erdy McHenry Architecture)\n Eliah Cappi (Project Architect\, Erdy McHenry Architecture)\n Keiko Tsuruta Cramer (Principal\, WRT Design)\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Symposium Summer Series— Unlocking the Potential of Solar Energy for Greater Philly’s Commercial and Non-Profit Buildings
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n★1 AIA LU & 1 GBCI CEU pending\nGoing solar can save businesses\, nonprofits\, schools and municipalities money\, while providing energy price stability and reducing carbon emissions. Yet there has been only limited adoption of solar by non-residential entities in our region. With funding from the William Penn and Green Family Foundations\, the Philadelphia Energy Authority and the PA Solar Center have teamed up to support organizations navigate the financial\, technical and logistical challenges that can stand in the way of installing affordable renewable energy through the PA Solar Center’s G.E.T. Solar program.\n\nThe session will explain how Solarize Greater Philadelphia and GET Solar will expand access to commercial solar throughout Southeast PA by leveraging available federal and state funding\, while supporting participants to navigate the various tax incentives and infrastructure decisions that accompany any solar project. This initiative will support any non-residential property owner\, with a focus primarily on assisting municipal\, educational\, and community-serving organizations within low-income and disadvantaged communities (LIDACs). PECO will round out the panel to discuss the incentives offered to commercial accounts for installing solar and share several case studies. Join this session to learn how: your organization or clients can utilize these services; the favorable economics of solar for non-residential properties; and ways to get involved in the program.\n\nPricing:\n\n Green Building United Members: FREE\n Non-Members: $10\n\nConsider becoming a member for discounted tickets to our educational & networking events![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″]Register Here![/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]Speakers[vc_column_text]\n\n Lisa Shulock (Director of Commercial Programs\, Philadelphia Energy Authority)\n Alexis Takoushian (Program Manager\, PA Solar Center)\n Brett Riley (Sr. Energy Efficiency Program Manager\, PECO)\n Katrina Pope (Office Manager\, Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority)\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Symposium Summer Series— Unlocking Synergies: Integrating LEED and SITES to Amplify Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n★1 AIA and 1 LA CES; 1 SITES\, 1 LEED AP BD+C and 1 GBCI pending \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Buildings and landscapes are interconnected\, and their careful integration enhances energy efficiency\, water conservation\, and biodiversity. By combining the LEED and SITES rating systems\, design teams can create integrated projects that address environmental resilience\, occupant well-being\, and climate adaptation on every scale-indoors and out. This session will explore the powerful synergies between SITES and LEED\, showcasing how these two frameworks can work in harmony to amplify a project’s sustainability impact. SITES offers a sustainable vision for how the land surrounding buildings performs\, delivers ecosystem services\, and promotes restoration of habitat. We’ll unpack the core principles of LEED and SITES and why they’re a natural fit together. Then\, we’ll dive into case studies that integrated both systems\, highlight best practices for aligning credits\, managing trade-offs\, achieving dual certification and the key challenges and lessons learned. \nPricing: \n\nGreen Building United Members: FREE\nNon-Members: $10\n\nConsider becoming a member for discounted tickets to our educational & networking events![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_align=”center” text_align=”center” shape_top_height=”150″ shape_bottom_height=”150″][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″]Register Here![/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]Speakers[vc_column_text] \n\nNikita Jathan (Associate- Sustainability Specialist\, Atelier Ten)\nRadhna Saxena (Associate- Sustainability Specialist\, Atelier Ten)\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Symposium Summer Series— A Well Rounded Conversation on Circularity
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n★1 AIA HSW LU & 1 GBCI CEU approved\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\nResource extraction\, manufacturing\, and construction and demo waste represent a significant impact on global emissions. Unfortunately\, when buildings are demolished and materials disposed of\, the carbon\, energy\, and labor value locked in those materials is lost\, concurrently increasing necessity for new resource extraction. Existing buildings represent deep material banks\, with resources that can be repurposed and/or used in future construction. While we know the worldwide opportunity for impact is large\, transition to a circular construction industry requires skills and processes for both managing material flows from existing to new buildings and for designing new buildings for disassembly and reuse. \nIn this virtual session as a part of our Symposium Summer Series\, an architect\, engineer\, and contractor will review the challenges and opportunities of circularity and how teams can prepare for and optimize reuse. The session will also highlight circularity-focused projects so attendees can apply strategies to their next project. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_align=”center” text_align=”center” shape_top_height=”150″ shape_bottom_height=”150″][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″]Register Here![/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]Speakers[vc_column_text]\n\n Angela Iraldi (Senior Sustainability Manager\, Skanska)\n Jimmy Mitchell (Sustainability Manager\, Skanska)\n Shefali Sanghvi (Associate Principal\, Director of Sustainability\, Dattner Architects)\n Denise Richards (Partner\, Keast & Hood Structural Engineers)\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Note on Registration and Pricing:\nThis first session of our Symposium Summer Series is free for all attendees—no membership required. We’re excited to kick off the series with an open invitation to join the conversation on circularity and material reuse.\n\nStarting with our next session\, registration will follow our standard pricing:\n\n Free for Green Building United members\n $10 for non-members\n\nNow’s a great time to consider joining our community!
