The Passive House Community 2020 Demonstration Project: Habitat for Humanity Oxford Green's mission is to collaborate with Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia to further their goal of providing healthy, affordable, high performance housing. Through this project, the Passive House Community will holistically explore ways to create Passive House certified designs using Habitat’s current project, Oxford Green, as a model.

We invite the community to help us implement our vision of making Passive House mainstream – from exploring cost and performance comparisons, analyzing material selections, examining design and construction trade-offs – all while having the opportunity for on-site volunteering experience!

This charrette will focus on both the HVAC and plumbing systems within the Oxford Green project. The goal of the systems charrette is to identify areas where the building MEP systems can be improved and simplified to increase energy efficiency with Passive House certification in mind. We will start with a brief overview of the systems currently designed and installed in the Oxford Green project and how they relate to the PH design principles. Following the overview, we dive deeper into the systems themselves from an installation, first cost, indoor air quality, and energy conservation perspective.

  • Stephen Wayland, Bruce E. Brooks
  • Jon Jensen, MaGrann Associates
  • Mike Campbell, Kitchen & Associates
  • Neil Goldman, Habitat for Humanity

Come to this charette with your engineering hard hat on for a night of good discussion and breakout sessions!

Whether you're experienced in Passive House or not, the 2020 Demonstration project will provide hands-on education to guide your own projects and help spread the Passive House mission! Let’s think how we can better our design approach so that we can have a brighter, more sustainable community and future.
