Over the past decade, SALT Design Studio has had the opportunity to help transform 15 barren schoolyards in Philadelphia into multifunctional spaces that manage stormwater, support outdoor learning, and provide opportunities for play and community connection. However, post-construction challenges like vandalism and limited maintenance resources demand practical solutions. This session explores strategies for designing resilient schoolyards by integrating smart design with realistic upkeep. Topics include fostering stewardship among staff, students, and the community; addressing climate challenges like droughts, floods, and extreme weather; and educating users on the benefits of green stormwater infrastructure and sustainable landscapes. Join us to learn insights and strategies for creating functional, beautiful schoolyards that thrive in urban environments.
