Equity, Innovation, and Regional Momentum at This Year’s Sustainability Symposium

View summaries of this year’s Sustainability Symposium sessions here.

Earlier this year, Green Building United put out a call for proposals for this year’s Sustainability Symposium. Our community answered this call with resounding enthusiasm, and today we’re excited to share an update on many of the sessions we can look forward to seeing on May 24th at Drexel University.

This year’s Symposium highlights the diversity of work happening across our region – and beyond – but several major themes are clear from reviewing this year’s program:

  • Innovation in Design and in Partnerships: For many attendees, the Sustainability Symposium is a place to learn about both the latest high-efficiency building technologies and new ways to think about working together to tackle the challenges of advancing toward a sustainable built environment. This year’s Symposium will feature sessions around lighting, embodied carbon, and designing to Living Future and Passive House Standards as well as highlighting partnerships with rural communities, preservationists and community-based organizations, and spiritual leaders.

  • DEI in Action: Green Building United and its members remain committed to advancing equity in sustainability, and this theme shows up across this year’s sessions. GBU members will share how DEI is showing up across their organizations, how a diversity of voices is essential to advancing high-performance building practices, and learn how storytelling and organizing is helping to advance environmental justice in frontline communities in our region.

  • Major Policy Advances and Challenges: We’ve written previously about this crucial moment in our region, from new political leadership in Harrisburg to the upcoming election in Philadelphia. These themes are present in sessions at this year’s Symposium highlighting successful home electrification programs and stormwater management innovations, and through discussions of the challenges around waste, recycling, and building policy that await new leadership in our region.

For more information about sessions, including descriptions and currently confirmed speakers, see here. Information about session timing and CEUs will be available shortly.

Later this month we’ll be sharing more information about tours at this year’s Symposium which will reflect the energy and enthusiasm of this year’s location in University City. We are also looking forward to announcing some keynote speakers and panelists soon.
