Volunteers are an integral part of our organization

and each year help us achieve our mission of promoting green building education and advocacy through a variety of programming and initiatives. From serving on committees, to helping at events, to donating time to a project, Green Building United provides avenues for everyone to get involved.

Committees

Joining a committee is a great way to dive into a specific focus area within our organization. Committees require a regular time commitment and meet in person and/or by phone on a monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly basis. Check out our committee opportunities to see which one/s may be the best fit for you!

Events

We have several major events throughout the year that would not be as successful without the help of our volunteers. These day-of-event volunteers provide support for:

Other event volunteer opportunities are announced in our e-newsletter as they become available. Check out the testimonial from one of our event volunteers!

“Volunteering with Green Building United was an easy decision for me. [Volunteering] gives me the opportunity to be a part of a network of professionals with ideals similar to my own. Volunteering as a room captain at the Sustainability Symposium event last year and as a part of the planning committee this year has allowed me to give back to the organization. I have been able to help curate the type of sustainability event that I would like to attend, and it has been fulfilling to be able to give my input as a young professional in the sustainability and green building realm.”

Projects

Volunteering for a Green Building United project requires the highest level of commitment of all of our volunteer opportunities. Last year, the Frankford Gateway Community Impact Project was developed and led by volunteers, who released a request for concepts and after careful consideration selected New Kensington Community Development Corporation’s Frankford Gateway initiative. Volunteers then raised funds and coordinated logistics for a volunteer day where more than 60 people prepared soil, weeded, picked up trash, and planted a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers.

In addition to this year’s CIP, we are excited for the 2018 Demonstration Project, coordinated by the Living Building Challenge and Passive House Communities. The intent of the Demonstration Project is two-fold: establish the feasibility of renovating existing brick masonry rowhouses to the Passive House standard; and design infill affordable housing to meet the requirements of the Living Building Challenge. No experience with Passive House or Living Building Challenge is required to participate.
