When we think about water quality, it’s easy to focus on rivers, streams, and drinking water. But the health of our water is shaped by decisions we make every day about land use, transportation, energy, housing, community development, and conservation.

That’s why protecting clean water requires more than environmental stewardship alone. It takes collaboration among organizations working across sectors to create healthier, more resilient communities—and it takes opportunities to bring those organizations together to learn from one another and explore solutions.

During Water Quality Month, we’re recognizing the many ways organizations throughout our region contribute to water quality outcomes, whether directly through watershed protection or indirectly through efforts that reduce pollution, strengthen climate resilience, and improve community health.

One recent example brought these connections to life on the Delaware River. The Living Future Community gathered for a sail focused on innovative and natural approaches to improving water quality and adapting our shorelines to a changing climate. Joined by experts from the Philadelphia Water Department, the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, and the University of Delaware Water Resource Center, participants had the opportunity to see firsthand how natural systems can play an important role in protecting our waterways.

The event highlighted several approaches that demonstrate just how interconnected water quality and community resilience can be. Participants learned about the use of mussels to help clean water, the development of wetland parks that both bring people closer to the river and provide buffers against changing water levels and dynamics, and living shorelines that protect vulnerable edges without relying on traditional bulkheading. These approaches illustrate an important shift toward working with natural systems rather than simply building around them.

That same principle is reflected in the work of organizations throughout our learning community. Some organizations work on the front lines of watershed protection. Wissahickon Trails helps preserve forests, open spaces, and stream corridors that naturally filter pollutants, reduce erosion, absorb stormwater, and protect local waterways. Their work demonstrates how land conservation plays a critical role in maintaining water quality and healthy ecosystems.

Other members contribute through planning and infrastructure. The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) supports regional planning efforts that help communities address stormwater management, flooding, transportation impacts, and land-use decisions that affect watershed health. Thoughtful planning can reduce runoff, protect natural resources, and create communities that are better equipped to withstand environmental challenges.

The connection between buildings and water quality is also significant. Through energy efficiency, sustainable building practices, and resilience initiatives, organizations such as Green Building United, New Ecology, the Energy Coordinating Agency, and the Philadelphia Energy Authority help advance solutions that reduce environmental impacts on communities and natural resources. Green infrastructure, sustainable development practices, and climate-resilient buildings can all contribute to healthier watersheds by reducing polluted runoff and supporting more sustainable resource use.

Climate change poses growing challenges for water quality, from more intense storms to increased flooding and stormwater pollution. The Delaware River sail offered a tangible look at how communities can respond to these challenges by strengthening natural shorelines and restoring or creating wetlands that can adapt to changing conditions. Efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build community resilience therefore have important water quality benefits as well. Organizations such as Generation180 and the Philadelphia Office of Sustainability help advance clean energy and sustainability strategies that support healthier environmental outcomes for both people and ecosystems.

Community engagement is equally important. Environmental improvements are most successful when residents and professionals are informed, involved, and empowered to take action. Bringing people onto the river to see these systems firsthand is one way to turn an abstract environmental challenge into something tangible. Through education, outreach, and stewardship programs, organizations such as the Overbrook Environmental Center similarly help connect communities to environmental issues and foster a shared commitment to protecting local natural resources.

The event also underscored the value of collaboration itself. Improving water quality isn’t the work of a single organization, discipline, or industry. It requires scientists, planners, designers, engineers, conservationists, policymakers, community organizations, and residents to share knowledge and explore solutions together. Continuing education opportunities—such as those that brought professionals together for the Delaware River experience—can help build the shared understanding needed to move innovative ideas from conversation into practice.

Together, these organizations and initiatives demonstrate an important reality: water quality is not just a water issue. It is connected to the health of our neighborhoods, the design of our infrastructure, the protection of our natural spaces, and our ability to build sustainable, resilient communities.

This Water Quality Month, we celebrate the diverse contributions of organizations across our learning community and the collective impact of their work. From mussels and wetlands to living shorelines, land conservation, sustainable buildings, regional planning, clean energy, and community education, there are many paths toward healthier waterways—and many opportunities for us to work together.

Clean water depends on collective action. As we recognize Water Quality Month, we invite our community to look beyond the water itself and consider the many systems, organizations, and people that help protect it. By learning from one another and advancing conservation, sustainability, resilience, education, and community engagement, we can help create a future with cleaner water, healthier ecosystems, and stronger communities for all.
