Karen Igou

Karen is Green Building United's Senior Program Manager for Community Engagement and oversees our Delaware programs. These include the Delaware Pathways to Green Schools Program which helps schools reach their sustainability goals and climate resilience work in Northeast Wilmington, a community devastated by flooding during Hurricane Ida in September 2021. She supports and collaborates with the GBU Delaware Community on education and policy initiatives and assists with event planning. Prior to joining GBU, Karen owned a farm to table grocery market and provided direct services as a social worker addressing housing and employment insecurity. She has also been a climate, ecological, and social justice activist and organizer for over two decades. Karen holds a Bachelor of Social Work from North Carolina State University and substantial experience and education around sustainable farming, biodiversity, and furthering social movements through non-violent direct action.
