There is a lack of clear guidance on how to construct more fire-resilient buildings using commercially available materials. This course will present solutions and construction details that leverage stone wool and other noncombustible materials to enhance the fire resilience of buildings. Attendees will be better equipped to adapt proven WUI hardening measures to new construction and retrofits in wildfire-exposed communities, improving both individual building resilience and neighborhood-scale outcomes.

As wildfire behavior intensifies and fire risk increasingly affects not only the wildland-urban interface, but also nearby suburban and urban communities, architects and builders need strategies that extend beyond traditional geographic boundaries. This session moves beyond basic WUI code compliance to explore how ignition-resistant construction, ember-resistant detailing, and fire-resilient material choices can be applied across both interface and denser neighborhood contexts. Participants will review recent developments in WUI-related codes and standards, with a focus on practical strategies for protecting structures from wildfire exposures including embers, radiant heat, direct flame contact, and structure-to-structure ignition. Drawing on fire testing data, field observations, and design examples, the session will highlight the role of noncombustible claddings, continuous stone wool insulation, cavity insulation, and critical detailing in improving building performance.

By the end of the course, attendees will be better equipped to adapt proven WUI hardening measures to new construction and retrofits in wildfire-exposed communities, improving both individual building resilience and neighborhood-scale outcomes.
