As urbanization expands, access to green space, natural habitats, and major urban parks becomes increasingly limited. Artificial Topography explores how the built environment can act as a prosthetic to nature, creating new ecosystems that support urban life. Through three case studies— Cira Green Urban Park, Franklin County Extension, and Mazur Hall Plaza at Temple University—this presentation examines strategies for integrating ecological infrastructure into cities. From rooftop parks that manage stormwater to research facilities that enhance agricultural resilience, these projects demonstrate how architecture can foster habitats for people, plants, and animals. By layering natural and artificial systems, they redefine how urban spaces interact with nature, transforming infrastructure into a restorative force. This session will provide insights into designing environments that not only coexist with nature but actively regenerate it.
